Full Circle

May 2019
The exhibition, Full Circle, is a tribute to the life of the artist Alison Horvitz.

Alison was an artist and a teacher who lived and worked in Fall River.

I had the pleasure of a studio visit with Alison in October 2015. Her studio on Jefferson Street was filled with activity. New projects were underway as well as older works on display for the afternoon. We probably spent about two hours together that afternoon.

Her digital portfolio has been in a folder on my computer since then, waiting for the opportunity for further development toward an exhibition in the gallery. I was saddened when I heard that she had died, knowing that I would not have another opportunity to talk with her. It is also bittersweet that her work is finally here in the gallery, a solo exhibition devoted to her prolific studio production.

It has been a satisfying but somber experience, and a capstone to a life expressed on her own terms. Sheila Oliveira, good friend to Alison, has written a wonderful tribute. Alison’s family made the final selection of works for the exhibition.

Alison wrote succinctly about her process,
“My work begins with wide irregular strokes of paint, sometimes applied with household objects, as well as brushes. Paint is applied, scraped away, repeatedly, until I have established multitude layers, or skins of paint, which reveal a history of the painting, transforming it into a history of personal experience. I find I can speak about a range of emotions with color and shape that I have no words for.”

Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, May 30 from 6-8 p.m. at the Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery. You can view the Bristol Fall River Campus map here.

The show runs through June 28.
